Angry Birds in Your Back Yard

This post begins our Better Than TV series of indoor fun.

With kids getting out of school for winter break, I know we’re all looking for no-casualty, indoor play options to keep the kids (and Mom!) merry and bright. Here’s one that won’t make you nuts!

We made molded birdseed ornaments this year for my son to give as gifts. If you’ve never seen these, they’re quite cute. They are also fun and easy to make- my 4.5 year old didn’t need much help from me.

We made a couple extra so he could have the fun of hanging them in our yard and observing the results.

What happened was the squirrels found them. I’d come out the front door, and there would be some spazzed out squirrel freaking out like he’d just found the mother lode and I was a claim jumper looking to shoot him in the back.

I don’t think the birds got any.

These have to dry overnight, but there’s still time to make some as holiday gifts. Medium size cookie cutters work best as molds. When you make the hole to hang them from, remember that they’ll be balancing from it. Also, you can’t get too near the edge or the top will crumble.

Find the recipe and instructions here, strap on an apron, and be prepared to sweep up some birdseed. Have fun!
