Beyond “Go Dog, Go” (Number 3)

For more recommendations for books with high language value and themes appropriate for young children, see the rest of our series.

Swallows and Amazons

One of the notable things about this book in the gender-segregated world of children’s literature is that boys and girls adventure together. The children are on their own, but in this case, at the toleration of interested parents willing to give them some freedom. This story about their summer of kids-only camping is interesting for parent and child. First in a series.

The Wind in the Willows

Oh, those madcaps, Mole and Rat! Planes, trains, and automobiles has nothing on these guys. It’s one adventure after another. Some parts may move too slowly for the small fry. If so, just skip them, and fill in the gaps later.

The School For Cats by Esther Averill

One of a 1940s series called “Jenny’s Cat Club,” this charming tale features a cat who drives a fire engine and talks about the beauty of making friends. With the underlying lesson that it’s not nice to tease, parents and children alike will agree that this one’s a keeper.

About Meghan G

I like blues, punk, and crime drama. I love having boys, keeping active, and the outdoors. I'm a cat person, but I think dogs should have equal opportunities.
