Berry Brownie Smoothie

berry brownie smoothie recipe Joy Makin Mamas

Much as I would love to make myself a delicous breakfast filled with fresh, nutritious fruit every morning, we all know some days that is not going to happen. When you have a family to take care of, sometimes washing and inspecting fresh berries, let alone sitting down to eat in the morning, is Not Going To Make The Cut. I solve this problem by keeping frozen fruit on hand so I can make myself a delicious- and portable- smoothie for breakfast any time I need one. (Bonus: Berries are full of good, nutritious things, so you’re still putting on your own oxygen mask first- you’re just being efficient at it.)

This smoothie is so thick your spoon will stand up. You can make this smoothie with fresh fruit, but it will not be as thick as it is with frozen. You’ll want to use really ripe banana for this. I peel mine and freeze them for smoothies when they start to get overripe. (If my husband doesn’t pitch them first…) That way they are handy and I don’t waste anything. The coffee, in addition to giving you a little “kick,” enhances the flavor of the chocolate so this really does taste like a decadent dessert. If you can’t have regular coffee becasue of the caffeine, try decaf to keep the bold chocolate taste.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup frozen blueberries
  • 1/2 cup frozen raspberries
  • 1 frozen banana
  • 1 scoop unflavored protein powder
  • 2 Tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup milk I use 2%, but any kind including soy, rice, or almond will work
  • 1/2 cup cold coffee
  • 6 ice cubes
  • sweetener to taste I like about 1/2 Tablespoon of sugar or honey.

Instructions

  1. Add dry ingredients to the bottom of the blender.
  2. Add fruit.
  3. Add liquid ingredients.
  4. Puree until smooth, scraping sides if necessary.

Recipe Notes

If you don't care to use protein powder, 1/3 cup plain yogurt will work just fine. As will about 1/2 block silken tofu.

  1. Argh, no kids here– what’s my excuse?! I think I may be slowly working my way up to the task of making a smoothie in the mornings… I’m on a pretty decent winning streak of managing to make oatmeal (oatmeal + almond milk + berries! That’s three steps) and take it to work with me. I dream of the days when appliances can be involved (I don’t heat the oatmeal… that would be four steps). This looks delish!

    1. Raspberries and strawberries are interchangeable in most recipes, so most likely. You could also use all blueberries if you didn’t have strawberries available.
